Easy and Healthy Breakfast Recipes (Item III) – Bottle Gourd Appalu/ Vada

Bottle Gourd is a source of iron, vitamins, potassium, manganese, zinc, thiamine, riboflavin and magnesium. It helps in reducing stress, weight, indigestion, stomach acidity and toxicity. It is a natural cleanser for skin, helps in treating jaundice and in reducing grey hair. You can make a lot of dishes with Bottle Gourd-like Vegetarian Curries, Pakoras, Dal, Chutney with its peel and much more. But today I am sharing the third recipe in Quick and Healthy Indian Breakfast Recipes- ‘Bottle Gourd Appalu’. You can also eat it as Snack.


Peeled Black Gram Dal (Urad Dal) – 1 cup
Bottle Gourd – Half of Bottle Gourd (Remove seeds and cut it into pieces)
Ginger – 100grams
Onions – 2 Onions cut in pieces
Green Chillies – 3-4 chilies (You can a few more chilies if you eat more spicy food)
Cumin Seeds (Jeera) – 2-4 spoons
Coriander Leaves – 2 pairs (Clean and cut it into shorts)
Salt – As per taste
Water – As per requirement
Oil – 1/2 liter


Soak the Peeled Black Gram Dal for 4-5 hours. Grind the soaked grams and move that paste in a container. Again grind the Bottle Gourd pieces and add them to the same container. Now, grind Ginger, Onions, Green Chillies, Cumin seeds and Coriander Leaves together. Remove and put it in the same container. Mix all the ingredients well and add salt to it. If the batter is thick, add little water. Cover the container with a lid and Keep it for 10-15 mins.

Heat Oil in a deep Pan, now take a small plate, put cloth/plastic paper on the back of it and apply oil on it. Take some batter and dab it on the plastic paper and then remove the dab batter in your right hand and put in hot oil. Once the dish turns little dark brown remove it in a plate. Your Bottle Gourd Appalu is ready to serve hot.
